PROJECT OVERVIEW
Project Size: This is a slightly above-average size 3,000 square foot roof with some very unique features.
Roof Pitch: This roof features multiple pitches ranging from 2/12 to 8/12. These varying pitches create an appealing look and style, which is common in both older homes and newer custom-built homes.
Complexity: Removing an old roof on a historic home while preserving all of the original trim and custom woodwork in its original or improved condition is a challenge.
Type of Existing Roof: The original roof was medium-thickness, 40 year old wood shake shingles installed directly over the original skip sheathing boards.
CHALLENGES & SOLUTIONS
Structural Inspection: The structure of the roof was in good shape. However, we discovered that electrical wires had been installed directly under the shingles in the gaps of the skip sheathing. This violates building code, as nails from the new plywood and shingles could easily have hit the wires if left unaddressed. We hired an electrician to re-route the wires, and fortunately, it did not delay the roofing process.
Underlayment: Older homes in Bountiful often have roof decks made of skip sheathing rather than plywood. While this worked well for wood shake shingles, it does not provide a proper nailing surface for modern asphalt shingles. To bring the roof deck up to code, we installed new OSB plywood over the existing planks across the entire roof. We then installed CertainTeed WinterGuard ice shield and DiamondDeck underlayment over the new plywood.
Venting System: This house required a specialty attic ventilation system to be up to Bountiful City building code. Because modern soffit vents were not an option, CertainTeed Edge Vents were installed along the bottom of both sides of the roof to allow cool air into the attic. Additionally, due to the home’s hip roof style, Lomanco 750 slant-back “turtle vents” were installed for hot air exhaust.
END RESULT
Type Of Shingle: We installed CertainTeed Presidential TL shingles in the “Charcoal Black” color. The Presidential TL style is designed to look like a wood shake shingle, making it a perfect replacement. It is also significantly thicker and heavier than a traditional asphalt shingle.
The end result was a job well done by the Shingle Pro team and a happy customer with a new, modern roof.
